EUN JEONG CHEON, PhD
Researcher in Human Computer Interaction Design

Welcome!
I am a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University. As a SU cluster hire in Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, and the Human-Technology Frontier, I am also a core faculty member at Autonomous Systems Policy Institute (ASPI). Previously, I was a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University in Denmark.
My research interests include human–computer interaction (HCI), human-robot interaction (HRI), computer–supported cooperative work (CSCW), and science & technology studies (STS). I am interested in how values can and should be incorporated into the design of future technologies. Through my research, I hope to offer alternatives to human-centered designs that contribute to building our relationship with technologies in authentic ways.
I received my Ph.D. in HCI/Design at Indiana University Bloomington where I was advised by Professor Norman Makoto Su. I was also blessed to work with amazing committee members: Erik Stolterman, Selma Šabanović, Jessica Nina Lester, and Mark Ackerman (University of Michigan). I received an M.S. degree in Information Science from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. At UNC, I worked on sociomateriality and smart/ traditional health tracking technologies users with Professor Mohammad Hossein Jarrahi. I graduated with honors from Ewha Womans University, where I began interdisciplinary studies.
News/Update
April 2025
Our CHI 2025 full paper "Encountering Robotic Art: The Social, Material, and Temporal Processes of Creation with Machines" received the Best Paper Honorable Mention award (top 5%) 🏆 —Congrats to Yigang and Lydia! We also had a Late-Breaking Work (LBW) on artists working with robots accepted to CHI 2025!
March 2025
I will be attending ACM/IEEE HRI' 2025 and two full papers will be presented:
1) “Hello, I’m Delivering. Let Me Pass By”: Navigating Public Pathways with Walk-along with Robots (WawR) in Crowded City Streets”
2) Minding the Stop-gap: Attending to the “Temporary,” Unplanned, and Added Work of Human-Robot Collaboration in Context (🏆 the Best Paper award!)
Feb 2025
I gave an INTEGRATE (NRT program) Colloquium talk at Univeristy of Wisconsin at Madison, invited by Prof. Bilge Mutlu. I had a wonderful time engaging with HRI researchers :-)
Jan 2025
Two CHI full papers have been accepted! One of the papers was led by our PhD researcher Yigang, and it's his first CHI full paper!! The other paper is a collaboration with fantastic HCI colleagues at KAIST, SNU, and UMICH!
Fall 2024
I co-organize the CSCW 2024 workshop “Labor, Visibility, and Technology: Weaving Together Academic Insights and On-Ground Realities” with amazing colleagues, Joy Ming, Lucy Pei, Rama Adithya Varanasi, Anna Kawakami, and Nervo Verdezoto! This year CSCW 2024, I serve as a registration chair
Summer 2024
I attended DIS 2024 to present "three" first-authored full papers: 1) Examining Algorithmic Metrics and their Effects through the Lens of Reactivity, 2) Amazon Z to A: Speculative Design to Understand the Future of Labor-Intensive Workplaces (with Vera Khovanskaya), and 3) Creative Precarity in Motion: Revealing the Hidden Labor Behind Animating Virtual Characters (with Shengyang Xu). It’s great being back in Denmark after three years! I also attended HCIC 2024 with our SU PhD students Yigang and Bappy. I spent most of my summer doing fieldwork in South Korea :-)
Spring 2024
I will be attending HRI'2024 as an author of the paper and as an invited panelist for a workshop "Workers-Robot Relationships. Exploring Transdisciplinarity for the Future of Work with Robots"
Winter 2023
Our paper, "Power in Human-Robot Interaction", (with Yoyo and Malte) has been accepted to ACM/IEEE HRI 2024! I am VERY proud of this theory paper.
Fall 2023
My solo-authored CSCW paper has been accepted! I presented this work in person at CSCW'23.
"Powerful Futures: How a Big Tech Company Envisions Humans and Technologies in the Workplace of the Future". Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 7(CSCW2), 1-35.
Summer 2023
It was a busy summer! I attended HCIC 2023 and had a blast, reuniting with old friends as a faculty member. I also attended DIS 2023 and reunited with my PhD advisor, Norman. It's hard to describe just how wonderful it was to meet with him and share updates about faculty life.
